St John's Phone Coordinators work as part of a rostered team. While on shift, Phone Coordinators are responsible for dispatching the local volunteer ambulance crew as required. Phone Coordinators do not take 000 calls, but are contacted by the central St John's Communications Team with relevant information for incidents.

General training is once a fortnight which involves everything needed to know on search, rescue to enhance skills. Commitment to attending training both fortnightly and over a weekend is a requirement. Able to work in a team and a able to commit to courses. This involves providing emergency repairs on buildings, to restoration of essential services and ferrying cargo and passengers across flood waters. Helping the community to recover by responding to natural disasters is only part of SES’ responsibility.
