Getting started with volunteering

In 2010, the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that over 6 million Australians volunteer, (or to put it another way a whopping 36% of the population). And the figure is closer to 40% today. SEEK Volunteer makes it easy for you to find a volunteer opportunity to suit your interests and location

Why Volunteer?

Don’t just make a living - make a difference, as well.

There is a great deal of satisfaction that comes from making a difference to people in your local community. Volunteering offers many other rewards too. You can learn new skills and gain valuable experience in a wide range of areas that may or may not be related to your paid work. It's also a great way to meet new people who share your interests.

How it works

It’s easy to make a world of difference. Finding opportunties and volunteering for great organisations is simple.

Choosing the right  volunteer opportunity can be a little daunting. So to begin with, try to be clear about what you want out of your volunteering experience and the skills you can bring to the right organisation.

Expressing interest in a volunteering opportunity

Once you find an opportunity you are interested in simply complete the online expression of interest form. This will be sent directly to the organisation who has advertised the role.

The organisation will respond directly to you with details and information about next steps. These may include:

  • Interview
  • Reference checking
  • Working With Children or Police Checks
  • Training
  • Information sessions

As many not-for-profit organisations looking for volunteers are operating on small budgets and limited staff (who are often volunteers themselves) it might take a few days for organisations to respond to your application. So be patient and don’t get disheartened.

Volunteer organisations

If you are interested in volunteering for a particular organisation or cause, you can find out more about every organisation that lists opportunities on SEEK by reading their organisation profile. This also lists the organisations current volunteer opportunities.

All organisations registered with SEEK have agreed to the volunteering definitions and principles drawn up by Volunteering Australia.

Registration and privacy

There’s no need to register to use SEEK Volunteer. It’s easy to use, completely free and available to anyone who is interested in volunteering. SEEK Volunteer does not collect any personal information. You decide what information you want to share about yourself when you express your interest in an opportunity listed by a not-for-profit organisation.

Why use SEEK Volunteer?

SEEK has developed and introduced this site (the first of its kind in Australia) because we saw an opportunity to blend our technological and marketing expertise with our commitment to being socially proactive, and make a difference to the community. We wanted to give something back just like you do!

We like to think that we have made a huge difference - not only to the thousands of people who wanted to volunteer, but to the many charities that have suddenly found loads more people to help out.

We are genuinely committed to the volunteering cause. In addition to delivering this free service, we also aim to support and promote a worthwhile cause that needs volunteers each month. (Our staff and management also get behind many of these programs, by volunteering their time and expertise.)
