About this opportunity

The Old Central Fire Station in Perth's historic Murray Street East precinct is home to the DFES Heritage Collection. The Collection helps to tell the cultural and technological history of the fire and rescue services in our State.

Volunteering behind-the-scenes is a rare opportunity to work with the DFES Heritage Collection.

Volunteers may assist with sorting, data entry, cataloguing, labelling, cross-checking, shelving or helping with research.

Behind-the-scenes positions are offered on an as-needs basis. Your EOI will be kept on file and if your skills and interest match what we are looking for we will be in touch.

Experience and/or study in a museum/library/heritage centre is highly desirable.

If you are someone who is:

  • enthusiastic, energetic and cheerful;
  • keen to learn new skills;
  • good with computers - especially databases;
  • some experience with (or currently studying) museum/library collections;
  • able to work with minimal supervision; and
  • reliable and willing to commit to a roster on a regular basis,
  • then we are looking for you to join our team.

Key Duties:

  • Update object entries in our eHive collection management system;
  • Assist with location audits of Collection objects;
  • Conduct historical research based on the Collection;
  • Undertake front-of-house team duties when required (eg illness cover);
  • Assist in the delivery of special events linked to the Collection in particular our annual Heritage Weekend in April each year.

This role may be suitable for TAFE/University students studying Library and Information Services and/or Museum Studies. The role could potentially be tailored to meet placement and internship requirements.


Additional requirements

National Police Certificate *. Working with Children Check *.

Experience working with museum/library collections is highly desirable. Or currently studying in this field.

Time Required

The Centre is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Behind-the-scenes volunteers can work across any of those days. The general commitment is one shift a week.

Training

After the EOI you will be invited to attend the next info session. One-to-one interviews will then follow. For successful applicants, you will receive an induction and on-the-job training.
