Native Animal Rehabilitation Volunteer
About this opportunity
WA Wildlife's Rehabilitation Ward program is for anyone interested in rehabilitating wildlife (there are no pre-requisites). Rehabilitation volunteers need to attend a minimum of one shift per week (8.30am - 2.30pm or 2.30pm - 8.30pm). Volunteers will work under the guidance of the Rehabilitation Coordinator and/or an experienced volunteer and are responsible for the following tasks:
- Preparing food for a variety of animals.
- Cleaning cages, vivariums, aviaries or other housing facilities.
- Washing dishes, laundry, perches and equipment.
- Sweeping, mopping of centre facilities.
- Weighing animals.
- Assistance with handling large animals.
- Record keeping.
- Husbandry and enrichment maintenance.
- Transporting animals to and from zoos or other wildlife organisations.
Minimum exposure to human beings ensures that animals in care recover swiftly, suffer less stress and are less susceptible to human conditioning and dependence. Unlike zoos or wildlife parks (which are stocked with domesticated, permanent animals) wildlife hospitals generally offer a 'hands off' wildlife experience. Even though animal handling/interaction is very low, you will have the opportunity to help sick and injured wildlife return to the wild. This process is crucial for their long-term survival and a privilege to experience. We train all volunteers on site and you do not need to have previous experience working with animals. However, in order to volunteer you must be over 18 years of age and is recommended you have a current tetanus vaccination.

Volunteers must be over the age of 18 and it is recommended you have a tetanus vaccination.
Please Note: There is a cost of $60.00 associated with becoming a volunteer which includes a sign-up fee (to cover administrative costs associated with your application and induction), uniform and name badge. $30.00 is paid prior to attending your volunteer Induction with the remaining $30.00 payable on your first shift.
