Deck hand / maintenance assistant on pilot steamer John Oxley under restoration

Museums & Heritage Regular - more than 6 months Rozelle NSW

About this opportunity

To get a feel for our work restoring and operating historic ships ; see our website, shf.org.au and click on EXPLORE

We picture you, the volunteer, as a person with some years of DIY experience, "handyperson" skills, and a keen desire to help finish the partially complete restoration of one-time Moreton Bay pilot steamer John Oxley. You will enjoy working outdoors in the cool sea breezes of Rozelle Bay, in Workshops which can genuinely be called a "Happy Shed". There are no cliques, no politics, no jealousies.

John Oxley is working towards becoming operational for cruises in the next few years . There is plenty of work to do before that happens and all those assisting with maintenance during this period will be given priority to serve as deck crew.

No specific skills required, other than a willingness to help out. Tasks can be assigned according to a volunteer’s physical capabilities, agility and experience. Basic skills such as operation of power tools, painting and general maintenance experience would be ideal. All ages, male or female welcome.

On your first day you will receive a cheerful welcome, safety orientation training and a guided tour of our work centres.

Access to the Workshops is by Light Rail to Rozelle Bay, frequent 500-series route buses from Town Hall and Victoria Road. Very limited member-only car space across the road.
