Museum guide

Museums & Heritage Regular - more than 6 months Newport VIC

About this opportunity

Our volunteer guides allow our visitors to enjoy a wonderful afternoon at the museum.

As a guide, you will help visitors to find their way to key exhibits, or to facilities such as the toilets, drinking fountains, or the museum gift shop.

Knowledge of trains and railways is not a prerequisite! Most of the questions our guides field about the collection are fairly easily answered, and with just a little bit of training we can have you all ready to confidently answer most questions in very little time.

What is most important are your interpersonal skills. Your ability to make visitors feel welcome, to assist them in finding their way around the site, and to provide a level of gentle supervision to ensure our safety rules are observed, are the key attributes of a successful volunteer guide.

Your participation as a volunteer allows visitors from across Melbourne, the state, the country and even around the world to discover Victoria's railway history. Most of our visitors find it a fascinating and enriching experience, and our volunteer guides are the people who allow this to happen. It’s a wonderful feeling when a visitor stops by on their way out to say how much they enjoyed their visit, and we thrive on the positive feedback!

If you wish, you may also like to work in our shop, selling tickets and souvenirs, answering the phone and assisting with enquiries. If this additional role is of interest to you, please let us know when you submit your application.

Newport Railway Museum Inc. is a registered charity, dedicated to the preservation of Victoria's railway history. Everyone at the museum is a volunteer, and every cent we raise through our ticket sales, shop sales and other fundraising helps us to achieve our aims.

We have a friendly, supportive team and we are very careful to ensure that we maintain this positive culture.
