Mentor a Child in Foster Care - 1hr per week

Young People Regular - more than 6 months Manunda QLD

About this opportunity

Are you ready to make a significant difference in the life of a young person in foster care? We are seeking dedicated volunteer mentors, known as Pyjama Angels, to provide support and guidance across Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. We work around the days and times you are available and look to match you accordingly. Location and any other preferences you may have are also taken into account.

As a Pyjama Angel, you'll have the opportunity to visit a young person in foster care for just one hour each week, offering valuable assistance in learning, life skills, and confidence-building. You do not need to be an expert! We are here to support you every step of the way. We provide training, ongoing check-ins, and guidance throughout your placement, ensuring you have the necessary resources and assistance to support the young person effectively.

Your one-on-one time with a young person has a profound impact, not only on their life but also on the Foster Carers in your community. Over time, you'll become a trusted mentor, serving as a constant source of encouragement and helping to create a brighter future for them.

What makes a great Pyjama Angel?

  • Ability to listen to your young person and foster their interests in a fun way
  • Patient and supportive nature with a non-judgmental attitude
  • Flexibility, reliability, and resilience
  • Basic understanding of the English language, literacy, and numeracy

** You will need to:**

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Hold a valid Working With Children Check or be willing to obtain one (we'll assist you with the process, free of charge)
  • Have reliable transportation or access to public transport
  • Be willing to dedicate approximately 1 hour per week + travel to a young person in care over a 12-month period (excluding any breaks for holidays)
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times

Can you spare an hour of your week? We would love to hear from you! Submit an expression of interest by clicking "Apply" or reach out to us at (07) 3256 8802 if you have any questions. The selection process includes submitting an online application, a 30-minute online interview where we can address any questions you may have, a one-day training session, and reference checks following training.

Together, let's make a lasting impact and bring joy to the lives of young people in foster care!
