Local Guide - Migrant & Refugee services
About this opportunity
We are looking for local guides and members of the community to meet with new arrival families to help them learn about their new surroundings and their responsibilities as tenants.
General duties listed below but not limited to:
House:
- How to use the washing machine ovens etc.
- Explain about the different bins and what goes in each, and collection days.
- How to manage smoke alarms
- What to do about maintenance and if urgent maintenance is required
- How to check the electric meter if blackout
Local area:
- Walk to shops if close enough
- Organise a Myki card
- Walk with them to the bus stop
- Catch a bus with them to the shops, show them how to tap Myki on and off
- Catch a bus to town and show them the shops and waterfront
IT help:
- Downloading PTV and myGov apps
Transport to:
- Appointments
- Orientation
Additional requirements
National Police Certificate *. Working with Children Check *.
While it is helpful to have this done in the client’s language, English-speaking people are more than welcome. Volunteers who can communicate with clients in the basics of English and provide transport.

Case Workers would be available for any concerns outside the volunteers’ scope. Inhouse instructions
