Adult Literacy Tutor - George Town Library

About this opportunity

Libraries Tasmania’s Adult Literacy Program is all about helping adults improve their everyday literacy, numeracy and digital literacy learning skills. To apply you will be required to complete a short written exercise about why you want to be a Literacy tutor. You will also complete a self-assessment checklist to make sure this is the right volunteer role for you.

Online training is provided and facilitated by TasTAFE. The training course is run over ten weeks and requires about 5-10 hrs per week to complete. Once matched with a client you will provide tutoring for a minimum of 1-1.5 hrs per client, depending on your availability. If you have prior relevant experience, you may not need to complete this training.

Provide learning support for clients using strategies determined by the Literacy Coordinator or other supervisor.

Encourage independent learning and facilitate access to Libraries Tasmania programs and services.

Prepare learning activities appropriate to the literacy levels and learning needs of the client.

Report on client progress on a regular basis.

Support the use of literacy software where appropriate.

Record volunteer hours using appropriate methods.

Please Note: As each organisation provides different levels/types of insurance, volunteers are reminded to check with the organisation as to the level of coverage for volunteers due to various restrictions to ensure they are covered for the roles they will be undertaking.
