Migrant Services Regular - more than 6 months Across: Bundamba QLD, Inala QLD

About this opportunity

About the AMEP Volunteer Tutor Scheme

The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is funded by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. In Queensland, the AMEP is delivered through TAFE Queensland. The Volunteer Tutor Scheme matches volunteers to AMEP students who are unable to participate in full-time study at their local TAFE Queensland site.

Tutoring helps students learn practical English skills for day-to-day activities such as banking, shopping, filling out forms, making and attending medical appointments and participating in their new community. Advanced students focus on preparation for work or further education.

Flexible hours and location

Volunteer home tutors provide an invaluable source of learning for students, who may choose a home tutor over face-to-face classes because they are elderly, pregnant, caring for a family member, working full-time or part-time, or because they live in a remote area.

We are currently looking for volunteers to work one on one with our students. While tutors and students normally meet at the student's house, you can choose other venues such as shopping centres, cafes or libraries. Times are flexible too — you can tutor whenever it’s mutually convenient for you and your student — during the week, after hours, or on the weekend.

No experience necessary: all training provided

You don’t need to be a teacher or have previous experience in tutoring to volunteer— all training is provided. We are looking for people who have a desire to help their community and meet the following requirements:

  • are over eighteen years of age and legally entitled to work in Australia
  • are proficient in written and spoken English
  • are willing to consent to a Criminal History check
  • are prepared to complete free tutor training with TAFE Queensland
  • can commit to the program for a minimum 1 hour per week for up to 6 months.

Next Training

We have several online and face-to-face training sessions scheduled, please submit your EOI and our Volunteer Tutor Coordinator will get in contact with you.
