About this opportunity

If you are an experienced Barista/Café Assistant we require your help. You will be making espresso style coffee, preparing and serving a variety food and taking orders, using POS system, as well as assisting in the running of the cafe to the public and our guests.

Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to volunteer as a Barista / Café Assistant.

Barista/Café Assistant volunteers are supported by the Hospitality Training Manager or appointed supervising Staff Member.

Barista/Café Assistant volunteers are required to make an ongoing weekly commitment for the long term to the role. There are two shifits Monday to Friday : 7:00am – 11:00am or 11.00am – 15.00pm

Main Responsibilities: During a typical shift the Barista/Cafe Assistant will complete a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Hospitality Training Manager or appointed staff member, which include:

  • preparing and serving food and beverages
  • taking customers' food and beverage orders
  • operating POS registers, accepting payments
  • clearing away used dishes and cutlery from tables when customers are finished
  • cleaning and preparing tables for use
  • washing dishes, cutlery and cooking utensils
  • cleaning cafe equipment such as coffee grinders, espresso machines *providing backup to other cafe employees and volunteers
  • Abide by WHS Policy and procedures and report any hazards to coordinator
  • Undertake training as required
  • Ability to work effectively in a Team environment

Barista’s /Café Assistants will be provided with a work shirt. All volunteers must wear full length pants and closed in shoes when working in kitchen/café environment

Highly Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Barista Experience Customer service focused
  • Previous Cafe experience Basic understanding of Food Safety Handling and Compliance
  • Valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) The Exodus Foundation Food Services Induction and Training
  • Basic understanding of Work, Health & Safety
  • Ability to follow instructions and basic checklists
  • Competent interpersonal and verbal communication skills

Desirable Personal Qualities:

  • Professional standard of presentation
  • Basic knowledge of WHS standards and practices Ability to be flexible and rise to the challenge
  • Honest, empathetic and kind Able to comfortably lift 12 kg or less
  • Positive and non-judgmental approach Have a sense of humour and be willing to contribute to an engaged volunteering experience
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Ability to stay calm and composed under difficult conditions
