About Outback Festival

The Outback Festival is staged Winton, Outback Queensland.

A biennial event organised by the Outback Festival Inc., it is a not-for-profit incorporated association. The event is staged in the September school holidays for five days from Tuesday to Sunday. The inaugural event was held in 1972 growing since then.

This country town, home to less than 1,000 residents literally explodes with excitement during the five day festival including rare, active and participatory events, such as the Outback Ironman, Ironwomen and Iron Juniors and the Century Cycle.

It has been coined quirky, strange and even weird by some, but the locals call it, the “Outback Festival”. It has been luring visitors from all over Australia and overseas since 1972 with its unique blend of outback themed events and authentic Aussie experiences, and will celebrate the 25th event in 2019.

The 5-day event is a combination of free and ticketed events with tickets available online.

Organised by local volunteers and volunteer Event Manager, there is strong local community support the event. The festival and its volunteers have been recognised several times and in the past decade has been the recipient of a Queensland Tourism Award, several Outback Queensland Tourism Awards and Australia Day awards from the Winton Shire Council.
