About Be My Koorda Aboriginal Corporation

Be My Koorda is a support group for Aboriginal children with Autism and other disabilities and their families.  Most members live south of the river, but more recently we are getting requests for support from the Northern Suburbs and as far south as Mandurah.   The group was established two years ago by parents of children with autism or other disability in response to a gap in culturally specific support services.  Members are passionate about advocating for more culturally appropriate services, networking with service providers, and organising activities for the children and their families. We coordinate access for children to school holiday programs delivered in the region,  run fortnightly LEGO Club for children in partnership with Autism West and organise a monthly support group for parents.  We have delivered a respite camp for mothers, and subject to funding offer a range of activities for the children, usually during school holidays. We have no core funding but have had support from Connect Groups to purchase a laptop and printer and insurances. We have no paid staff - parents or volunteers give of their time to organise activities. There are 35 members (parents) in our support group and growing and we host a Facebook page to keep families informed of relevant activities and support services available.  We have a bus to transport children and parents to various activities and have recently been given space in a community centre in Maddington to deliver childrens' activities, use as office space and hold peer support meetings.
