About African Women Group (Auspiced by Friends of STARTTS)

The African Women’s Group (AWG) is a non-government organisation auspiced by Friends of STARTTS (a registered charity organisation) and is supported by the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS).

AWG was formed in 2005 and is made up of African women from migrants and refugee backgrounds living in New South Wales. The main aim of the group is to bring together women from African backgrounds living in NSW and to empower and build their capacity through the dissemination and gathering of information and to engage them in educational and training programs, cultural and inter-cultural and social activities.

Added to the above, AWG also supports the resettlement of women by building strong relationships and support networks with organisations working with migrants and refugees in NSW.

AWG has initiated and successfully implemented a number of community projects and programs such as the Women’s Cultural Exchange Program, the African Cultural Festival, the annual Africa Community Conference and the famous African Women’s Dinner Dance.
