While the primary role of the SES is to respond to incidents involving floods and storms, it also provides crucial support and assistance to other emergency service organisations. SES is open to men and women with a reasonable degree of physical fitness and a passion to get involved within their community. When a natural disaster strikes or an emergency situation arises, DFES’s SES volunteers can be found providing a wide range of volunteer services to help the community.

The role of Emergency Relief Volunteers is designed to provide valuable assistance to Council Officers in the set-up and smooth operation of the Emergency Relief Centre which aims to support community members who may be affected by an emergency. Tasks could include setting up the relief centre to run efficiently, assisting in meeting, greeting and directing community members seeking refuge and assistance, organising food and drink for visitors and community members.

Volunteer Marine Rescue members serve their respective communities on a voluntary basis by undertaking both operational and non-operational roles. VMRS groups work in close liaison with the Western Australia Police, coordinating and performing a range of marine rescue activities for the WA community. Phone Coordinators do not take 000 calls, but are contacted by the central St John's Communications Team with relevant information for incidents.

St John is looking for local legends to support their regional communities as a Volunteer Ambulance Officer. This role involves attending emergency and non-emergency ambulance calls, as well as other duties as required. All training provided.
