Volunteer Support Persons (VSPs)

About this opportunity

Volunteers provide support as part of a team, to people with a life limiting illness with little hope of a cure. They provide emotional and practical support to the whole unit of care including dying people, carers and family. Volunteers need to be good listeners and comfortable with grief and loss. Volunteers will be asked to provide support in a range of settings including in people’s homes, within designated palliative care unit, aged care facilities and other health care facilities as required.

People who have skills in complementary therapies are incl. massage, reflexology, reiki, are encouraged to apply as well as those with creative writing skills as we plan to develop a strong life review/life story program. Men are also asked to apply as often men prefer company with other men to engage in meaningful conversation and similar interests.

Additional requirements

Driver's Licence (C) . National Police Certificate *.

Once referred by VSA, Palliative Care make contact with volunteer which may take a couple of days and ask them to fill out expression of interest, give brief overview and advise of future training dates if set, otherwise will recontact once dates are set. We ask participants to attend all training dates as an initial commitment; with an expectation that people will have availability to volunteer for 5 hours per week as a guide; all hours in volunteering are flexible and negotiable with the Coordinator.
Palliative Care will do the Police Check after they finish training and accepted into program.

***TRAINING DATES TO BE 2021 BUT STILL SEND THROUGH THOSE INTERESTED AND PALLIATIVE CARE STAFF WILL CONTACT INTERESTED VOLUNTEERS AND KEEP THEM ON A LIST UNTIL NEARER THE TRAINING DATES.****

Varied. Not more than 15 hours / week Longer term applicants preferred so visa holders not accepted.
