Sometimes it is the little things, like having somewhere clean and comfortable to stay near the hospital, that can make a difference for families going through the stress of having a child undergoing cancer treatment.
Cancer and cancer treatment weakens the immune system leaving them vulnerable to infections. Infection is one of the most common life-threatening complications of cancer and cancer treatment. It is vital that their living conditions be kept as clean as possible. We are looking for enthusiastic people who can assist us with laundry facilities and housekeeping at our short-term accommodation facility in Woolloongabba.
Duties would include general housework, washing all bed linen including sheets, pillow cases, towels, doonas, mattress protectors. We also require housekeeping assistants to not only strip beds but also make up beds in three rooms to get bedding ready for the next oncology family. Full laundry facilities available on site plus clothes lines and a dryer for wet weather days.
Skills required: General Laundry/Housekeeping skills. You will be required to know how to make up beds correctly and neatly, taking pride in the finished look; know how to use a washing machine, use of clothes lines and dryer and folding clean washing neatly.
Volunteer characteristics: Neat and tidy appearance with a very kind demeanor and willing to take initiative and have commonsense. Prompt and reliable person who takes pride in the finished product.
Skills gained: Pride in knowing that the linen they are washing and tending to plus the accommodation rooms they are preparing will be utilised by children with cancer and their family members when the children have to come to Brisbane for further tests.
Driver's Licence (C) . National Police Certificate *. Working with Children Check *.
Own drivers licence would be handy however there is a bus station nearby at the Mater bus station - only 4 blocks from our Woolloongabba office.
Approximately 1.5-2 hours; weekdays between 10-12am; 1-3 days per week. Flexibility with days would be preferred but not essential.Training
