Dog Rescue Newcastle is the largest 100% volunteer-run dog rescue organization in NSW that requires committed volunteers to join its team to care for dogs at our shelter.

**Position Summary: **

The Shelter Animal Attendant is responsible for the daily care, health, and well-being of animals at the shelter.

This role involves feeding, cleaning, exercising, and monitoring the animals, as well as providing support to the shelter team in various capacities to ensure a safe, clean, and humane environment for all animals.

Key Responsibilities:

**Animal Care: **

Feed and provide water to animals according to their dietary needs and schedules.

Clean and sanitize animal enclosures, cages, and common areas to maintain a healthy environment.

Monitor the health and behavior of animals, reporting any concerns to the supervisor.

**Shelter Maintenance: **

Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shelter, including animal living areas, supply rooms, and public spaces.

Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, laundry, and waste disposal.

**Animal Handling: **

Safely and humanely handle animals during feeding, cleaning, and medical treatments.

Dog walking, basic training, and playtime in the yards.

**Qualifications & Attriubutes **

Open Minded and team player attitude

Willing to get down and dirty including dog slobber from kisses among other things.

Ability to handle animals of various sizes and temperaments.

Physical ability to perform tasks that involve lifting, bending, and extensive walking.

Love for dogs and a commitment to brightening their day.

Ability to attend a minimum of 1 shift per week for 2 hours.

**Working Conditions: **

The Shelter environment can be physically demanding and may involve exposure to loud noises, animal waste, and potential bites or scratches.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, and may require working in varying weather conditions.

Shifts available are

  • Morning from 7:30am - 9:30am
  • Midday from 11:30am - 1:30pm
  • Afternoon from 4:30pm - 6:30pm

You don't need any specific skills, just a bit of energy, a team player, and a desire to help improve the lives of dogs waiting for a second chance.

Time Required

Minimum 1 shift per week for 2 hours. More shifts and opportunities are available if required.
