Adult volunteers to mentor English as an Additional Language students.

Education & Training Regular - more than 6 months Flemington VIC

About this opportunity

We are looking for volunteers (over 21) to help in our program mentoring or tutoring English as an Additional Language students in a one-on-one situation. Volunteers must speak clearly and have competent reading and writing skills.

Most of our English as an Additional Language students do not have access to the wider community. They lack confidence to engage with native English speakers and rarely have the opportunity to speak English outside the classroom.

To help develop their confidence and encourage them to extend themselves, we have a mentoring program whereby students are paired with an English speaking tutor/mentor for one hour a week.

As most of our students are over the age of 35 we would like our volunteers to be a bit older too. No experience is necessary, just wanting to help is enough.

You would not be expected to actually teach your student, but you can if you and the student are agreeable. The relationship with the student is what is most important.

We need mentors for Tuesdays and Thursdays at the moment, but this can be changed with negotiation once you have met your student.

Additional requirements

Covid-19 vaccination .

We are interested in people above the age of 21. As our students are mostly over the age of 35, we like to match them with mentors who have some life experience. There are usually no pairings on weekends or out of school hours unless negotiated with the student. We also do not encourage mentoring in the student's home, rather meeting on neutral ground, a park, a cafe, here at Farnham Street, or in a local library.

Time Required

At least one hour a week, but longer can be negotiated. No weekend or evenings as most students have children (unless negotiated with the student).
