About this opportunity
The Prison In-Visits Program supports positive family interaction and provides a variety of arts, craft and diversionary activities for children to share with their parents.
The following programs are currently being delivered at Acacia Correctional Centre:
Keeping Us Together This evidenced based parenting program uses mindfulness and reflection to inspire dads in custody to examine and improve their communication with children so that they may foster more positive interactions which support children’s development and positive identity.
Storytime Storytime is for parents wanting to strengthen their bond with their child, gain literacy skills and learn different ways stories can be shared with their children. The Storytime program allows parents in custody to become an integral part of their child’s learning and life skills associated with reading. Outcomes for the story time program include strengthening the incarcerated parent’s bond with their child. Storytime aids the development of a child’s learning and life skills, and increases the parent’s literacy levels. In general, reading and storytelling stimulates a child’s imagination, language and word association skills, which can encourage their brain development and intellect.
Stay Together, Play Together SHINE for Kids’ Stay Together and Play Together offers high‐quality, fun, structured and unstructured play experiences for children and parent in custody and provides opportunities for play‐based learning to support positive child development. Play should be freely chosen, be largely self‐directed, intrinsically motivated, spontaneous and pleasurable.
