About this opportunity

Mernda Repair Café is the first community Repair Program for the community of Whittlesea hosted at the Mernda Community House and outdoor community space. It is a free, inclusive and cross cultural community event that offers repairs of personal items by volunteer Repairers. Our focus is to bring awareness of a more sustainable lifestyle where we can divert items from landfill in our community. We hope to ignite interest and the sharing of skills in repair and maintenance of items.

Join the Team: Be an Eco Warrior and help the community to reduce waste going to landfill.

To assist with the sharpening of tools that a community member has brought to the event.

To share your knowledge of tool sharpening and maintenance with the community.

Please note that community members are responsible in bringing their own replacement or broken parts, if possible.

VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES • To the sharpen tools to a working order, if possible. • Assessing if the tools and or knife is repairable or not, during the event time. • Bring their own tool bag for the role. • Maintain repair café machinery and tools to a working order. • Setup and pack down the work space at events. • Notify any issues with tools and low stock of the Repair café toolkit. • Notifying the Repair Café Coordinator and support staff of any electrical, tools or interpersonal issues at the event.


Additional requirements

National Police Certificate *. Working with Children Check *.

VOLUNTEER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Years of experience and sharpening knowledge in sharpening tools or knives.
• Clear verbal communication.
• Experience working with the public.
• Ability to work within operational policies and maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to work in a culturally appropriate way with migrants and people from refugee backgrounds, volunteers, students, guest speakers and group facilitators.
• An understanding of the refugee experience within Australia.
• To be able to work as part of a team (of volunteers, students and staff) but also able to work independently and remotely if needed.
• A non-judgmental attitude and respect for others.
• To be reliable, conscientious and accept direction.
• Respect all forms of confidentiality and abide by the Agency’s Code of Ethics.

Time Required

• Repair café events will be held at the Mernda Community House, 2 Heals Road, Mernda, VIC. • Events will run once a month on Saturdays from 10am – 2pm. Volunteers will be required to either come earlier to setup at 9.30am. • Dates for events are: 11 Feb 18 March 22 April 20 May 17 June 15 July 12 August 9 September 14 October 18 November 9 December
