Kids Program Assistant Volunteer

About this opportunity

The school time activity clubs aim to give students enrolled at Thomastown West Primary school additional educational support through a range of engaging activities. A significant number of these students come from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Young Voices in Media: Students plan, record and develop their own podcast

STEAM: Students use modular electronic kits to make their own creations and other fun science projects

Fun Reading Club: Engaging activities to promote a love of reading. This term’s theme is Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes.

Whittlesea Community Connections is a Child Safe organisation and all volunteers will be required to undergo a Working with Children Check and for those that have one - to attribute our organisation to their current check. A National Police Check.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Support the learning needs of students in a fun and friendly manner.
  • Assist with weekly activities.
  • Help with set up and pack up.
  • Develop positive relationships with students in the program.
  • Reporting any concerns around student wellbeing to staff within the program.


Additional requirements

Covid-19 vaccination . National Police Certificate *. Working with Children Check *.

Skills, attributes and experience
* Interest and desire in assisting students with their education
* Empathy for people with different life experiences
* Understanding of Whittlesea Community Connection’s mission to address disadvantage in the community, and to promote community participation.
* Ability to work within operational policies and maintain confidentiality
* Ability to work in a culturally appropriate way with both young people and parents
* An understanding of the refugee experience within Australia
* Ability to work with child safe parameters

Time Required

Times as listed below. Volunteer must be able to commit to one of these time slots weekly for the school term. 1:15 pm – 2:30 pm Monday: Young Voices in Media 1:15 pm – 2:30 pm Tuesday: STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, art and math) 10:30 am – 11:45 am: Fun Reading Club
