About this opportunity

Mernda Repair Café will be the first community Repair Program for the community of Whittlesea hosted at the Mernda Community House and outdoor community space. It is a free, inclusive and cross cultural community event that offers repairs of personal items by volunteer Repairers. Our focus is to bring awareness of a more sustainable lifestyle where we can divert items from landfill in our community. We hope to ignite interest and the sharing of skills in repair and maintenance of items.

The Repair Café events will run once a month, from April to December 2022. The events will be covid compliant, run by a team of volunteer Repairers and Helpers from the community with support from the Repair Café Coordinator on the day. We understand that this position is voluntary and we will work with your availability.

Volunteer responsibilities: •To capture the story of the day’s events of the Repair Café; in the form of mini interviews with people willing to be interviewed on their experience of the event, plans of the spaces and details of repairs. Interviewees will be members of the public, Repairers, and event volunteers. • To have and maintain your own video and audio equipment for the role. • To video edit and finished clips with Repair Café intros and outros of credits and logos. • Towards the end of the year a longer edit of best moments will needed. • Upload draft versions and finished video files to Mernda Community House Youtube or Vemio accounts. • To be friendly, polite and welcoming and to help foster a safe space for everyone at the event. • Always ask for permission to video people. • Notifying the Repair Café Coordinator of any issues with tools, equipment, members of the public, room setup and hazardous or dangerous situations during the setup, event itself and after the event.


Additional requirements

Covid-19 vaccination . National Police Certificate *. Working with Children Check *.

• Experience in event videography. furniture repair.
• Clear verbal communication.
• Experience working Has had some retail or hospitality experience with dealing with the public.
• Basic video editing skills.
• Skills in exporting and uploading files to online platforms like Youtube and Vemio
• Good computer/IT skills.
• Ability to work within operational policies and maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to work in a culturally appropriate way with migrants and people from refugee backgrounds, volunteers, students, guest speakers and group facilitators.
• An understanding of the refugee experience within Australia.
• To be able to work as part of a team (of volunteers, students and staff) but also able to work independently and remotely if needed.
• A non-judgmental attitude and respect for others.
• To be reliable, conscientious and accept direction.
• Respect all forms of confidentiality and abide by the Agency’s Code of Ethics.
