Media and Communications Officer

Environment & Conservation Regular - less than 6 months Katoomba NSW

About this opportunity

Join our growing volunteer community and help us engage our audiences with your passion for media and communications.

About the role

The Media and Communications Officer role supports the work of the Institute by helping us engage our audiences and share information about our activities, people and goals. This volunteer role is flexible. You can work from home or from our base in Katoomba. Either way, the role requires between 2 and 5 hours of work per week for a skilled volunteer, and can be shared between two or more people as a team effort. For interns seeking training and work experience, we would ask for a minimum time commitment of one full day per week.

Key Duties

  • Team participation - brainstorming and sharing ideas, collaborating with other staff and volunteers, and getting involved as much as you like.
  • News stories - writing blog and news stories about our activities and posting them on our website.
  • Digital Media - sourcing/taking photos and helping to produce videos about our activities and our community.
  • Social media - posting content, interacting with other channels, and escalating issues as they arise to the Operations Director. This role keeps an eye on our social media channels and helps to nurture their growth as well as protecting our brand.
  • E-Newsletter - helping to curate and produce our quarterly e-newsletter, which includes a mix of stories, event invitations and calls for donations.

Skills & Experience

We are open to taking on interns who are studying media and communications and are looking for work experience in this area. For those who already have experience, ideally you will have worked in a media and communications role and are able to share a portfolio of work. Both volunteers and interns will need to be able to learn how to update our website using the Squarespace platform, as well as how to login and help manage our social media channels.

Additional requirements

A solid grasp of the English language, the ability to write clear copy and grammar proficiency.

Time Required

Between 2 and 5 hours per week for skilled volunteers. For interns who require mentoring, we would ask for between 7 hours (1 day) and 14 hours (2 days) per week.
