About this opportunity

Through empowering athletes with skills and confidence in leadership roles, Athlete Leadership (AL) opens the door for Special Olympics Australia (SOA) to increase brand awareness, reach new athletes, retain experienced athletes, coordinate better informed programs and engage the wider community.

The State Athlete Leadership Coordinator must be available to attend organised Athlete Leadership workshops throughout the year, as well as Athlete Advisory Group meetings as and when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver AL in line with SOA framework guidelines • Provide leadership and direction to State AL Coordination Team • Develop partnerships with external groups – for facilities / trainers / mentors and support • Coordinate and support clubs through the athlete nomination process • Liaise with clubs to coordinate and initiate leadership experiences • Coordinate mentor support and engagement • Coordinate the development of State Athlete Advisory Group • Coordinate the operations of leadership delegates at events • Collect and report on state’s athlete leadership activity

Competencies / skills

• Proven administrative ability • Excellent communication and team skills • Ability to motivate and support team members • Attention to detail and computer literacy, including regular access to email • Ability to work within set boundaries • Ability to facilitate groups • Completed Train the Trainer Course (Desirable)

Experience / Education

• Experience working with people with an intellectual disability • Experience working in a professional environment • Experience coordinating people • Experience working with Special Olympics (Desirable) • Knowledge of Special Olympics Athlete Leadership and Unified Leadership principles (Desirable)

Key Tasks

Program Delivery • Deliver and report on program objectives in line with SOA guidelines • Oversee athlete nomination process and support clubs to deliver on their AL responsibilities • Program operations, including; venue bookings, organise resources, communicate to regions & athletes detail of training • State Athlete Advisory Group is operational and minutes are fed back to state committee • Support AL Team to support and engage mentors
