Cherry Lake Market Co-ordinator

Community Services Regular - more than 6 months Altona VIC

About this opportunity

As the Cherry Lake Market Co-ordinator (or, in a shared role, one of 2) you will have the opportunity to be part of an event which has become an institution in Altona over 30 years! Set in the grounds of the beautiful and picturesque Cherry Lake Reserve, with up to 80 stalls, you will be part of and will lead a team of caring and supportive volunteers who strive each month to give the community a place to connect, have fun, and earn some extra cash. This is an opportunity to connect with others and make new friends achieving something worthwhile together. Experience the crisp air of a sunny Sunday morning at Cherry Lake in June and the refreshing breeze off the water in February! Delight to the smell of the onions and sausages on the morning air. Swing along to the music of the bands entertaining the crowd. Lions Club of Altona has run the Cherry Lake Market as an outreach to community and a fundraiser for more than 30 years. It is an old fashioned “trash-and-treasure” market combined with some excellent craft and food stalls. Some of our stallholders have been attending regularly for more than 10 years and are like part of the Altona Lions Club family. Many are pensioners who look forward to the market each month as their only opportunity to connect with community.

You will use your existing skills or develop new ones in event organisation and team leadership, while caring for a team of some 20 volunteers. You will practise – or develop – your negotiation skills, while liaising with Hobsons Bay City Council and up to 80 stallholders each month. You will also be helping the Altona Lions Club with its biggest fundraiser, knowing that every dollar raised goes back to the community for projects which help others. After 30 years, a stall at the market still costs just $20! There will be no deep end here. We propose a training and mentoring period under the guidance of the current Market Co-ordinator for 3 months.
