About this opportunity

Barnardos Australia Mentoring Programs cater to boys and girls aged between 6 and 16 from vulnerable families who require additional support with regard to educational and/or social and emotional needs. Educational Mentors (Tutors) provide educational assistance, one-on-one for 1-2 hours a week during the school term to support literacy and numeracy and break the cycle of poor educational achievement through homework assistance and other educational activities as well as supporting the child or young person's social and emotional well-being, aiming to build self-esteem and resilience.

Most of the children/young people referred to us are about 2 yrs behind their age in at least English & Maths. You can help us break a child out of a cycle of poor educational achievement. If you are over 20 and want to tutor a child in English, Maths or whatever you feel confident in. Tutoring can take place in the family home, the mentor's home or in the community (e.g. public library), usually on a weekday evening. Volunteer mentors are matched Canberra wide. Please apply now!
