About this opportunity

In this rewarding role you will be trained to provide one-on-one support to people with any type of cancer who do not have the support of family and friends when they need it most.

CanCare volunteers know 'A little bit of help can go a long way', when a person is managing a cancer diagnosis and the treatment required. Our volunteer CanCare Navigators provide much needed personalised support that can help improve the outcomes for people with cancer.

In this role you will provide one on one peer support to a person with cancer, learn new skills and engage in a rewarding volunteer experience where you will have access to ongoing training and a peer support network.

The role of the CanCare Navigator is varied and depends on a person’s needs, navigators become part of the support network for a person with cancer. Tasks a navigator can be involved in can include:

  • Supporting a person to access the information they need
  • Finding the community services and support they need
  • Completing complex medical forms
  • Managing Medicare and PBS issues
  • Finding transportation to treatment
  • Connecting a person to support groups
  • Organise or take a person on a social outing
  • Sourcing financial assistance
  • Organising domestic assistance
  • Ordering medical equipment and supplies
  • Providing back-up during a difficult time
  • Guiding a person through the health care maize, and
  • Just being there when someone needs a friend

All our volunteers attend a free two-day training program. CanCare Navigators are matched to a person with cancer, you then have regular contact one-on-one with this person either face to face, over the phone, via Skype etc. for up to 2 years. Or until a person no longer requires support.

Volunteers are supported by the CanCare Program Manager and have access to ongoing training and support. All expenses are reimbursed. The organisation will conduct a National Police Check on all successful applicants.

Friendly nature, caring, self-motivated and works at their own initiative.

2-5 hours per week.
