Refugee English Tutor - Townsville

Migrant Services Regular - more than 6 months West End QLD

About this opportunity

Our aim is to provide volunteers to visit the refugee families in their Townsville home. If you volunteer with us, we will be asking you to assist people to learn English at a conversational level or higher. Some tutors help with the children’s homework, others simply visit each week as friends. We try to make sure that the families feel welcome and cared for in our community.

Tutors will be working in pairs & visit the home of a refugee family for one hour a week. These visits are mostly scheduled between 4pm and 6:30pm Monday - Friday evenings. Tutors need no qualifications, experience or special skills. We are looking for people who want to know that they can make a difference to a family and to a person’s future. Volunteers can work with a friend or be placed in a team who match their own time availability.

We understand that volunteers are not always available for an hour every week although that is what we prefer. St Vincent de Paul will assist you to get a Blue Card at no cost and we also run police checks on all volunteers.
