Our main restoration project is steamer John Oxley, and there are many regularly used vessels on which maintenance is essential. James Craig is a magnificent operating tall ship – a 3-masted barque built in 1874 so she is now 148 years old – and she needs you to help look after her!

Sydney Heritage Fleet owns, restores and operates historic steam ships, sailing ships and many smaller launches. Our current major project is the restoration to full ocean-going condition of John Oxley a former Moreton Bay pilot steamer, 760 tons. You, the volunteer will be a skilled welder and steel fabricator to aid in the final stages of hull restoration, particularly the forecastle. Your team leader is gentle giant whose welding surpasses marine standard for boiler work.

From a rusted skeletal hulk in Recherche Bay Tasmania, she has been completely rebuilt by the volunteers at Sydney Heritage Fleet and now makes harbour and ocean voyages for the public often setting all of her 21 sails. Keeping her seaworthy needs constant attention , to paintwork, woodwork, rigging and deck caulking. We need you to join the happy team who carry out this work regularly on the ship.
