for Northern Healthcare VOLUNTEER Association - Community Services
Volunteers in this role provide support and guidance to the visitors and staff of the Modbury Hospital outpatients department.
The Lyell McEwin Hospital serves a community of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Some people may find the hospital difficult to navigate finding the ward or service they need which can often be stressful. Guides are often the first face a visitor sees when entering the hospital and have the important role of greeting patients and visitors as they arrive, escorting or directing them to where they need to go and to make the hospital a more welcoming and friendly experience.
For many years, scientific evidence has supported the powerful effect human touch and interaction can have on development and recovery from illness, however in our busy hospital environment, nurses are often so busy performing clinical duties that other tasks such as play can be forgotten or are just not possible to fit in. A large proportion of our patients have families who are unable to stay with their child overnight during hospitalisation due to work or family responsibilities.
Volunteers work in partnership with paid staff of the ward or community, under the supervision of Team Leader/NUM/Office Manager to enhance the quality of Care experience in a “non - clinical holistic way” for patients as well as the relatives and friends of the patients.
Modbury Hospital Guide Volunteers are based at the Hospital main entrance and assist patients and visitors with directions to their destination. Guide volunteers must be interested in interacting with the public; be able to deal with occasional stressful situations; be physically fit enough to stand and walk much of the shift. A Guide can be rostered Mon – Fri and shifts can vary from 4 hours to a full day. Training and induction is provided
We are currently seeking friendly and outgoing volunteers to assist in the Dialysis Unit, including assisting ward staff with miscellaneous tasks. Volunteering with Northern Healthcare Volunteer Association is an opportunity to become a valued member of your community while gaining some retail skills. Contributing some of your free time can make a real difference to others and to yours.
