About Central Craft

Establish in 1974 Central Craft is a member based not-for-profit organisation in the Araluen Cultural Precinct, Mparntwe / Alice Springs. Approximately 2 kilometres form the CBD, The Araluen Cultural Precinct is home to some of the most significant artistic, cultural, and historical experiences in Mparntwe / Alice Springs and provides a unique visitor experience, encompassing Central Australia’s key cultural institutions and collections. Our annual program comprises workshops, exhibitions, weekly group gatherings, and projects that facilitate community participation and inclusion through craft. Central Craft is a not-for-profit member organisation based in Alice Springs that supports and promotes traditional and contemporary craft and design practice in Central Australia.

Central Craft values the role of artistic expression in contributing to the wellbeing of individuals and the broader community. We seek to inspire others and facilitate opportunities for people to practice and broaden their artistic skills and creativity. Central Craft strengthens the local community by providing opportunities for learning, creative expression, networking, collaboration, and social engagement.
The organisation strengthens our community by providing emerging practitioners as well as established artisans opportunities for learning, creative expression, and social networking. It supports emerging practitioners through to established artisans working in disciplines such as ceramics, lapidary, jewellery making, leather craft, woodwork, painting, basketry, weaving, spinning, lacemaking, felt making, knitting, screen printing, silk painting, surface decoration, fabric manipulation, embroidery, fashion design and construction.
Central Craft provides advocacy and support, promotion, professional development opportunities, workshops, access to workshop facilities, a group meeting space, a retail outlet, and gallery space for established and emerging craftspeople living in the 786,000 km2 region stretching from the South Australian border north to Tennant Creek. Central Craft aims to nurture and promote excellence in craft and design practice for all Central Australians by:
• build the visibility of contemporary craft and design from the Northern Territory.
• exhibit high quality craft and design to local, regional, and international audiences.
• engage and educate individuals and groups in craft and design practice.
• improve the viability of emerging and professional craft and design practitioners.
• build strong cross-cultural partnerships to create opportunities for innovation in craft and design practice.
• enhance the reputation of the Northern Territory as a significant centre for contemporary craft and design.
