About One Education

A child born today without access to technology in their formative years is at risk of missing out on social and economic opportunities later in life. Addressing this issue with current technology is not only environmentally irresponsible, but has proven too costly for schools and communities to implement - making the digital divide an inevitability.

At One Education we are developing a socially responsible way for every child in the world to gain access to technology as part of their primary education. The One Education Infinity will use independent modules that can be combined, repaired and upgraded over time to allow for long-term savings, improved functionality, increased social impact and reduced environmental impact.

One Education is a social enterprise and a registered and tax-deductible charity. Since 2008, One Education has delivered over 50,000 computers to children at disadvantaged remote, rural and metropolitan schools across Australia.

Beyond just providing a device, One Education has developed an ongoing professional development, monitoring and evaluation programme to ensure the technology is being used effectively in schools. Professional development is not limited to teachers, with hundreds of children attending regional kids meets to share experiences in being their school’s IT mechanics.

The ‘One Education Way’ has been the subject of a Stanford Social Innovation Review case study and is now part of a multi-year Australia Research Council Grant conducted in partnership with Swinburne University of Technology, University of Wollongong and University of Sydney.

A recent update of the devices software has found 40% have made the transition to Android and in the last two months over 85% have been in use. A tremendous outcome considering school testing pressures and a myriad of other school commitments that exist.

The current generation of computers have reached end-of-life and were sourced from One Laptop per Child in the US. Using lessons learned in distributing 50,000 computers, One Education is designing, developing and distributing the Infinity. The current target is to reach 1 million users by 2020.
