About Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries Inc.

Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries’ (EMS) is an incorporated, not-for-profit, non-government organisation. The program is based on (with permission) the highly successful New Zealand program ‘Experiencing Marine Reserves’.
The organisation is governed by a 10-person volunteer management committee supported by a 5-person volunteer Inclusive Program subcommittee.
EMS relies on volunteers to run its events – both above and below water. There are currently 91 volunteers registered with over 35 actively involved. The organisation currently employs one part-time Program Manager to manage the Community Snorkel Program, Volunteer Program, Training Program, and provide committee executive support. After 4 years and much growth in the organisation and its reach it is no longer sustainable to run with only one staff member.
EMS's primary objective is to provide children and adults with safe and professionally supervised 'hands-on' and ‘in water’ experiences within South Australia's marine environment; supporting conservation, education, cultural recognition, healthy lifestyles and active community engagement.
Our mission is to empower the community to support marine conservation through their involvement in EMS activities as well as to connect the community through EMS experience and education initiatives.
EMS has recently launched its new Inclusive Snorkel Program to provide an ocean snorkel experience to people of all abilities and backgrounds including people living with a disability, on Autism spectrum and of CALD backgrounds. EMS was successful in winning funds from Department of Human Services to purchase specialist equipment (floating wheelchair, floatation devices, boards with viewing portholes and modified wetsuits), and training to provide the necessary skills and knowledge to work with people living with disabilities. EMS has also just partnered with Total Beach Access for use of (at no cost) three all-terrain beach /immersive wheelchairs + Total Beach Access staff (volunteer) support for the Inclusive Program.
