About Postvention Australia

Postvention Australia is the national association representing and supporting people impacted by suicide bereavement. The organisation is a member-driven organisation, representing both individuals and families bereaved by suicide and their service providers. Postvention Australia's mission is to promote life by supporting and representing those bereaved by suicide and all those impacted in the community by suicide loss through leading and advocating, educating and training, and connecting.

Each year in Australia, approximately 3,300 people take their own lives, the equivalent of nine lives lost per day - more than double the number of people lost to road death. Some cohorts are even harder hit such as Indigenous Australians and members of both CALD and LGBTQIA+ communities. New research shows that for each suicide death, approximately 135 people are directly affected, which means 450,000 people in Australia are affected by suicide each year. There is a significant body of evidence demonstrating that people bereaved by suicide have a higher risk of suicidal behaviour, mental health disorders and complicated grief. Postvention Australia strives to build a sense of hope in this traumatic bereavement journey and envisions an Australian community that both responds compassionately, and empowers those bereaved by suicide.
