About Prader-Willi Syndrome Association Of Victoria

The Prader-Willi Syndrome Association of Victoria Inc. (PWSA Vic) is a volunteer lead ACNC registered Australian Charity, with many volunteers having lived experience. Since 1979, the PWSA Vic has been providing support to families, professionals and community organisations in the southern states of Australia. First and foremost, our purpose is to support the individual living with PWS. We do this by providing vital support and services. Each year we host the PWSA Vic Time Out Camp which is designed to encourage those living with PWS and their families (parents and siblings) to develop friendships, build resilience and self-confidence all while gaining an understanding of PWS through education programs provided by local and International professionals. The camps main purpose is to encourage inclusion for all, by providing a range of activities and sessions for all ages. We encourage all families living with PWS from across Australia, to attend the camp as there is so much to be gained, by all members of the family, from the three day event.

It is imperative that we provide these vital services and supports to families very early on in their journey, to ensure that each child living with PWS is given every opportunity possible to receive optimal care and assistance throughout their life. This means that we personally visit each of our new families (in hospital or at their home) to provide them with information about the support that is available to them. We also provide information to maternity hospitals, genetic counsellors, paediatricians and midwives to ensure that professionals are aware of our service and can provide our contact details to new families.
In providing these supports and services, we are also doing all that we can to assist and educate the family unit to ensure that they have the right tools to keep their child/sibling safe, assist with meeting developmental milestones and helping them find comfort in knowing that there are others out there willing to provide support and they do not have to face the challenges of PWS alone.
