VOLUNTEERING AT BETHANIA STREET COMMUNITY GARDEN

About our organisation

Bethania Street Community Garden at Cox Park in Lota was created by Wynnum Manly Community Gardens Group Inc in 2011. With over 200 members and 1000 square meters of communal fruit and vegetable gardens we host a range of activities including gardening, special events and playgroup. Volunteering can be matched to skill sets and interests
Bethania Street Community Garden is a Centrelink approved volunteer organisation (ID 3780) offering a range of gardening and auxiliary roles. No experience is required just the enjoyment of gardening and learning from each other. All gardening materials, training and equipment is provided. An OH&S induction is given to all new members on commencement.

Roles

o Gardening with a social group Wednesdays - 2 hours a week 7.30 to 9.30 am: Join our group of volunteers who keep the garden flourishing and productive. Activities include planting, weeding, watering, organic pest management, harvesting and compost making. This is followed by morning tea in our open air kitchen. All garden beds are communal (there are no individual garden plots) with produce harvested on the day shared among the volunteer’s present.

o Watering Roster – 2 hours a week during opening hours: Join a team of volunteers who water at the garden each day.

o Ground maintenance - 2 hours a week during opening hours: Join a team of volunteers who mow, whipper snip and maintain garden equipment.

o Community Composting Hub – Various hours: Pick up material from local sources and deliver to Bethania Street composting hub (must have vehicle and current Driver’s Licence).

o Events – 2 hours a week: The garden is a wonderful resource for many local people wishing to learn more about sustainability, composting and growing their own food. In partnership with Brisbane City Council we host free and low cost events ranging from worm farming to making your own natural body care products. The role assists with selecting and scheduling events, taking bookings and being present at workshops. Refer to the program of events for 2018.

o Under 5 years Gardening Times – 2 hours a month 9.30 to 11.30 am: The monthly playgroup gives children aged 0-5 and their parents or carers the opportunity to socialise in a natural, relaxed setting. It has allowed many local families to make life-long friends and establish a support network. The role would assist the Coordinator with activities. The role would need to be filled by someone who is willing to become a member of Wynnum Manly Community Gardens Group and apply for a Blue Card (at no charge) if they do not already hold one.

o Promotions – 3 hours a week: The role assists with monitoring and posting to our Facebook page, preparing items for the quarterly e-newsletter and monitoring and posting to our website.
